Claude Pro Renewal Payment Failed? Why Your Account Was Downgraded, How to Update the Card in Settings → Billing, Why Max Charges $220, and Real Renewal Data from Our Cards (USDT / USDC) — 2026

Claude Pro or Max renewal payment failed and the account shows Free? Anthropic says that when your payment method fails, the account is downgraded. Web subscriptions accept only credit and debit cards (no PayPal or Venmo). How to replace the card under Settings → Billing → Update (the new card becomes the default for all future renewals), why App Store and Google Play subscriptions are fixed in Apple or Google, why prices exclude tax and Max can renew at $220, refunds, real data from our own cards (37 successful and 49 declined Claude subscription charges in 90 days, 40 of them insufficient balance), and renewing with a prepaid virtual card bought with USDT or USDC. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: when a Claude Pro or Max renewal cannot be charged, Anthropic says the account is downgraded, so paid features disappear and the plan shows as Free. There is one place to fix it: Settings → Billing on claude.ai, where you click Update next to the current payment method; the new card replaces the old one and all future renewals are charged to it. On our cards, about eight in ten failed Claude renewals were simply not enough balance, most often on Max after tax. If your bank card keeps failing, a prepaid virtual card bought with USDT or USDC, such as Pink Card from pinkcard.cc, can be added there.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). Anthropic rules are taken from support.claude.com articles on paid plan billing, declined cards, billing address and tax, cancelling and refunds, and from claude.com/pricing, as of 2026-10-20, and may change; your Billing page is what counts. Pink Card fees are those shown on the purchase page on 2026-10-20. Pink Card is not affiliated with Anthropic.

What happens after a failed renewal

  • Plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period, monthly or annual. The billing date cannot be changed directly; you can only cancel and subscribe again.
  • In its "I paid but my account shows Free" checklist, Anthropic lists: "Your payment method failed and your account was downgraded."
  • Whether and how often Anthropic retries, and whether there is a grace period, is not published. On our cards we see further attempts over roughly two weeks (details below).
  • After updating the card, check the Billing page. If the account has already been downgraded, follow the prompt to subscribe again.

Why the renewal was declined

  1. Not enough balance. The most common one. Pro is $20 a month and Max $100 or $200, and the pricing page says prices exclude tax. Tax is added by billing address; on our cards Max renewed at $210, $218 and $220.
  2. Expired or locked card, for example a card locked by the issuer after repeated declines.
  3. Billing address mismatch. Anthropic asks that the billing address matches the card’s country of origin, is in a supported location and matches the bank’s records exactly; it says a missing accent or misspelled street can trigger a decline.
  4. A 3D Secure check not completed, or an issuer blocking foreign charges.
  5. Anthropic does not receive detailed decline reasons from banks. It suggests trying another payment method, trying again later, or contacting your issuer.

Update the card on claude.ai

  1. Sign in to claude.ai in a browser and open Settings → Billing.
  2. Click Update to the right of the current payment method and enter the new card’s number, expiry, CVV and billing address.
  3. Save. The new card becomes the default payment method and all future renewals are charged to it; the old card is no longer billed. There is no separate "remove card" button, because updating replaces it.
  4. For Pro, the billing address is set from the card’s billing address and tax is calculated from it, so enter the address exactly as your card issuer gives it.
  5. Do not resubmit several times in a row. If the account was downgraded, subscribe again once from the Billing page.
Web subscriptions accept only credit and debit cards; Anthropic does not accept third-party processors such as PayPal or Venmo. If you subscribed in the Claude app on iOS or Android, Apple or Google decides the payment options and you update them in your Apple Account or Google Play; iOS refunds can only be issued by Apple.

Cancelling and refunds

  • Cancel in Settings → Billing at least 24 hours before the next billing date. You keep the paid plan until the end of the current period.
  • Anthropic handles refunds only for payments defined as refundable in its Terms of Service. In the EEA and UK you may get a refund within 14 days of purchase, prorated by use.
  • Refunds cannot be processed while a dispute (chargeback) is pending.

Our own Claude renewal data

We checked Claude subscription charges on our own cards (merchant ANTHROPIC* CLAUDE SUB) from 2026-07-22 to 2026-10-20: 37 successful, 49 declined and 4 reversed. Of the 11 cards with declines, 9 had been charged successfully before, so failures were mostly renewals; 5 of the 11 were later charged successfully again.

  • 40 declines (about eight in ten) were the balance not covering the charge: the issuer reported a cumulative, single-transaction or monthly limit, or insufficient funds, and in each case the remaining balance was below the amount.
  • 5 were expired cards and 4 were cards already locked.
  • Successful Pro-tier charges: 7 were exactly $20.00 and 3 were $21.00 or $21.78 (tax added). Max-tier: 17 were exactly $100 or $200 and 7 had tax added, such as $105, $106.25, $210, $218 and $220.

A typical case: a card on Max was charged $220 a month ($200 plus 10% tax) in July and August. In September the renewal failed for insufficient balance, and it was attempted four more times over the next two weeks, failing each time. Keeping $200 on the card is not enough when the bill is $220.

Renew Claude with a prepaid virtual card (USDT or USDC)

Anthropic’s Pro billing FAQ lists credit and debit cards and does not say whether prepaid cards are accepted (its Team plan FAQ explicitly accepts prepaid cards). Our cards do pass Claude renewals, as the data above shows, but we cannot promise that every card or every renewal will.

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 (shown as BSC or BNB Smart Chain on most exchanges; network fee usually under $1) or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. Enter your email twice. No account and no sign-up are needed.
  4. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
  5. On claude.ai, go to Settings → Billing → Update, enter the card with the billing address from the email and save once.
  6. Keep the balance above the next renewal. Top-ups of the same card usually arrive within about 30 minutes and the number does not change, so Claude keeps billing the same card.

How much to keep on the card (worked examples, before tax)

  • Each renewal needs at least the bill plus $1. Pro monthly at $20: $20 + $1 per transaction + $2.50 monthly card fee = $23.50 a month, so a $110 card covers about four months.
  • Pro annual at $200 (billed up front, $17 a month): needs $201 on the day it renews, so choose the $220 preset.
  • Max at $100: $103.50 a month, one month on a $110 card. Max at $200: $203.50 a month, which needs the $220 preset; if tax makes it $220, you need $221 and a $220 card is not enough, so load more.
  • Paying for a $220 card: ($220 + $10) × 1.03 = $236.90. Topping up $100 later: $5 + ($100 + $5) × 5% = $10.25 in fees, $110.25 in total.

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-20)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10).
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month). Claude retries failed renewals, so top up or cancel before the card runs dry.
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum top-up $30, usually on the card within about 30 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.
Claude’s paid plans are only for users physically located in supported locations, and an account needs a phone number from a supported location. Pink Card is a payment tool and does not replace complying with Anthropic’s terms.

FAQ

Why does my Claude account show Free after I paid?

One reason Anthropic lists is that your payment method failed at renewal and the account was downgraded. Update the card in Settings → Billing and subscribe again if prompted.

How do I change the card for Claude Pro?

On claude.ai: Settings → Billing, click Update next to the current payment method and enter the new card. It becomes the default for all future renewals; there is no separate remove button.

Why did Claude Max charge $220?

Claude’s prices exclude tax and tax is calculated from your billing address. $200 Max with 10% tax is $220. On our cards Max charges with tax included $105, $106.25, $210, $218 and $220.

Can I pay Claude with PayPal?

No. Web subscriptions accept only credit and debit cards, and Anthropic says it does not accept PayPal or Venmo. In the iOS or Android app, Apple or Google decides the payment options.

Can I renew Claude Pro with USDT?

Not directly. You can buy a prepaid virtual card with USDT (BEP-20 or ERC-20) or USDC (ERC-20) at pinkcard.cc and add it under Settings → Billing → Update. Anthropic does not say whether Pro accepts prepaid cards, so we cannot promise every renewal passes.
