Short answer: a failed ChatGPT Plus renewal does not end the subscription on the spot. OpenAI retries the charge later, and a retry sometimes succeeds, but it does not say how many times it retries or how long Plus keeps working, so leave it too long and you drop back to Free. Work out which kind of failure it was (empty card, locked card, expired card, issuer block), fix it where you are billed (chatgpt.com, Apple or Google Play), and then let the retry happen instead of clicking again and again. If your bank card keeps failing on renewals, a prepaid virtual card bought with USDT or USDC, such as Pink Card from pinkcard.cc, can be added as the new default card.
Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). OpenAI rules are taken from help.openai.com articles on failed renewals, removing a payment method, invoice dates, cancelling and refunds, as of 2026-10-20, and may change; your Billing page is what counts. Pink Card fees are those shown on the purchase page on 2026-10-20. Pink Card is not affiliated with OpenAI.
What happens after a failed renewal
- Billing date: Plus renews on the date you subscribed (subscribe on the 12th, pay on the 12th of every month). OpenAI does not support changing it.
- OpenAI says renewal payments may fail "due to security measures or issues with the payment method itself".
- The billing system may retry the payment later, and a failed charge can succeed on a retry. The number of retries, the interval, the length of any grace period and when the account is downgraded are not published.
- OpenAI’s Pro help page says a failed renewal payment does not by itself mean the subscription has ended; for web subscriptions, follow the payment recovery instructions in the billing email.
- What we see on our cards: one card was retried every three to four days for about four weeks after a failed renewal, ten attempts in all; another was retried almost daily for a few days until the card was locked (details below).
Which kind of failure is it?
- Not enough balance. The most common one. Plus is $20, and in some places tax is added based on the billing address, so the real charge can be $21–$24. A card holding exactly $20 fails.
- Locked or closed card. After repeated declines the issuer may lock the card; once a card is closed OpenAI still tries to renew on it every month, and every attempt fails.
- Expired card. Update the expiry date or add another card.
- The issuer blocks foreign online charges, or a 3D Secure check was not completed.
- Billing address or ZIP code does not match the card. OpenAI also requires that both you and the card issuer are in a supported country.
- OpenAI does not receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so only your issuer can tell you exactly why.
Change the card on chatgpt.com
- Sign in to chatgpt.com in a browser, open Settings and select Billing.
- Under Payment methods, add the new card with its number, expiry, CVV and billing address.
- In the new card’s ••• menu, choose Set as default.
- Then remove the old card from its ••• menu. The default card can only be edited, not removed, so add the new one first; OpenAI recommends this so paid services are not interrupted.
- Some accounts use a billing portal instead: Settings → Account → Payment → Manage. The steps are the same.
- After switching, wait for the automatic retry or use the payment link in the billing email once. Do not retry several times in a few minutes.
Subscribed in the app? Fix it in Apple or Google
- iPhone or iPad: Apple bills the subscription and charges the payment method in your Apple Account. Change it in iOS Settings; the Billing page on chatgpt.com cannot.
- Android: Google Play bills it (the statement shows GOOGLE *ChatGPT). Change the card in Play Store → Payments & subscriptions.
- Moving from the app to the web: cancel on the original platform first and subscribe on chatgpt.com after the paid period ends, or you are charged twice.
- OpenAI says subscribing on chatgpt.com is often the easiest option if you use several devices.

Refunds
- A renewal that failed was not paid, so there is nothing to refund.
- For charges that went through, OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable; a discretionary refund may be available if you contact it within seven days of the charge, through the chat in the Help Center. Forgetting to cancel does not qualify by itself.
- Users in the EU, UK or Turkey who cancel within 14 days of purchase are eligible for a prorated refund.
Our own ChatGPT renewal data
We checked ChatGPT subscription charges on our own cards (merchant OPENAI *CHATGPT SUBSCR, both the San Francisco and Dublin entities) from 2026-07-22 to 2026-10-20: 192 successful and 238 declined. Of the 77 cards with at least one decline, 64 had been charged successfully by ChatGPT before, so most failures happened at renewal, not on the first payment. Only 16 of those 77 cards were later charged successfully again.
- 165 declines (about 7 in 10) were the card balance not covering the charge. The issuer reported a cumulative, single-transaction or monthly limit; we checked card by card, and in each case the remaining balance was below the amount.
- 71 were cards already locked or closed (Blocked) that OpenAI kept trying to renew.
- 2 were expired cards.
- Of the successful Plus-tier charges, 67 were exactly $20.00 and 47 were between $20.01 and $28 (for example $21.20, $21.80, $22.06 and $24.00), which is tax added by billing address.
A typical case: a card paid $20.75 a month for three months in a row. In the fourth month the renewal failed for insufficient balance, and over the next four weeks it was retried ten times, failing each time for the same reason. Topping up after the first decline would have let the next retry go through.
Keep Plus renewing with a prepaid virtual card (USDT or USDC)
- Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
- Pay with USDT on BEP-20 (shown as BSC or BNB Smart Chain on most exchanges; network fee usually under $1) or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
- Enter your email twice. No account and no sign-up are needed.
- The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
- On chatgpt.com, go to Settings → Billing → Payment methods, add the card with the billing address from the email, set it as default, and let the renewal retry.
- Keep the balance above the next renewal. Top-ups of the same card usually arrive within about 30 minutes and the number does not change, so OpenAI keeps billing the same card.
How much to keep on the card (worked examples)
- Each renewal needs at least the bill plus $1. Plus at $20: $20 + $1 per transaction + $2.50 monthly card fee = $23.50 a month, so a $110 card covers about four months.
- Plus with tax at $21.80: about $25.30 a month, still about four months on a $110 card.
- Pro at $200: $200 + $1 + $2.50 = $203.50, which needs the $220 preset.
- Paying for a $110 card: ($110 + $10) × 1.03 = $123.60. Topping up $50 later: $5 + ($50 + $5) × 5% = $7.75 in fees, $57.75 in total; $100 costs $110.25 in total. Top up a day before the billing date.
Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-20)
- Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10).
- From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
- Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month). OpenAI retries failed renewals, so top up or cancel Plus before the card runs dry.
- Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), minimum top-up $30, usually on the card within about 30 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
- Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying. Cancel Plus before you stop using a card, so it is not retried after it is closed.
