Gemini API and Google Cloud Billing Payment Declined: Prepay Credits, Auto-Reload, Accepted Cards, Fixes, and What Happened on Our Prepaid Virtual Cards (USDT / USDC) — 2026

How paying for the Gemini API works in 2026: new paid-tier accounts default to Prepay credits bought through a Google Cloud Billing account (minimum $5, maximum $5,000, credits expire after one year, non-refundable), with optional auto-reload. Which cards Google Cloud accepts, the fact that Google’s docs say prepaid cards are not accepted, why payments get declined, what a failed payment does to your API keys and projects, the fix order, and real charge data from our own cards (6 successful Google Cloud charges on 6 cards, no failures, not guaranteed). Updated October 2026.

Gemini API payment, short answer: you pay through a Google Cloud Billing account linked in Google AI Studio. Since March 23, 2026 new paid-tier accounts default to Prepay: you buy credits first (minimum $5, maximum $5,000), usage is deducted from them, and when the balance hits $0 every API key on that billing account stops at once. Optional auto-reload buys more credits when the balance runs low. Google Cloud bills Visa, Mastercard, American Express and debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo, but its payment-methods page also says plainly: “Prepaid cards aren’t accepted for payment.” Our own prepaid virtual cards have paid six Google Cloud charges without a decline, so it can work, but Google can refuse a prepaid card at any time and you should not build production on that assumption.

Written by the Pink Card team (pinkcard.cc). Google rules are taken from the Gemini API billing docs (ai.google.dev), Google Cloud Billing docs (payment methods, manual payments, resolving declined payments, free trial) and the Google Payments Center help as of October 2026 and may change. Pink Card fees are those shown on the purchase page on 2026-10-17. Pink Card is not affiliated with Google.

How Gemini API billing works in 2026

  • Turn on the paid tier in AI Studio: on the API keys or Projects page click “Set up billing”, pick or create a Cloud Billing account, add a payment method and contact details, then choose Prepay (or Postpay if your account is eligible).
  • Prepay is the default for new users. Minimum purchase $5, maximum balance $5,000. Purchased credits expire after one year and are non-refundable. Switching from Prepay to Postpay is not supported.
  • Prepay credits only pay for Gemini API usage in AI Studio, not for other Google Cloud services on the same billing account.
  • Auto-reload (optional): you choose a trigger balance, a reload amount and a monthly auto-charge limit. Each reload is a separate card charge.
  • Spend caps by tier: Tier 1 (billing linked) $250; Tier 2 (after $100 paid and 3 days) $2,000; Tier 3 (after $1,000 paid and 30 days) $20,000 and up. At the cap the API stops until the next cycle.
  • The $300 Google Cloud free trial does not cover Gemini API usage since March 2026.
  • Your payments profile country cannot be changed. A different country needs a new payments profile, and available payment methods depend on that country and the billing currency.

Which cards Google Cloud accepts

  • Accepted: American Express, Mastercard, Visa, debit cards with the Visa or Mastercard logo; Discover (US only), JCB (Japan and US only), plus local methods in a few countries (bank account, PayPal in Spain, Italy and Mexico, UPI in India, Pix and Boleto in Brazil).
  • Not accepted, per the same page: prepaid cards. Virtual cards are not mentioned; in practice Google decides from how the issuer classifies the card.
  • You may see temporary authorizations when adding a card. The free-trial check is a hold of $0 to $1 that is released later, not a charge.

Why a Google Cloud or Gemini API payment gets declined

  1. The issuing bank refuses it. Google’s docs say the decline comes from your bank or card issuer, not from Google. Many cards block foreign online charges by default.
  2. The card type is not accepted. Prepaid cards are listed as unsupported, so some are refused when you add them or when a charge runs.
  3. The balance or card limit is too low for the purchase or the auto-reload amount, including any tax added for your payments profile country.
  4. Billing details do not match what the issuer has: name, address, postal code, or a payments profile country that differs from the card.
  5. OR_BACR2_44 and similar codes while creating a billing account. Google has no public page for this code; community threads report it at billing setup and verification. Do not keep retrying; wait, then try once with a different card.
  6. Too many attempts in a short time, which triggers risk checks on both the bank side and Google’s.

What happens when a payment fails

  • Google may stop running your services until the payment goes through. If the billing account stays invalid for a long time, some resources can be removed, and removed resources cannot be recovered. Google gives no fixed number of days.
  • Gemini API can be suspended for a declined payment, an overdue balance, or an invalid or expired payment method, even if there is Prepay credit left (for example when another Google Cloud service on the same billing account fails to charge).
  • At a $0 Prepay balance, every API key in every project linked to that billing account stops working at the same time. Keep a buffer or set auto-reload carefully.

Fix it in this order

  1. Stop retrying. Open Billing → Payment method and see what Google says is wrong.
  2. Ask the bank whether it blocked the charge, and allow foreign online payments if you can.
  3. Click “Fix” next to the payment method, or add another accepted card, then make a manual payment if there is an overdue balance.
  4. For Prepay, buy credits once with an amount the card clearly covers. Turn auto-reload off until a manual purchase has gone through.
  5. Restart any Google Cloud services that were stopped. If the same card fails twice, wait several hours or switch cards.

What happened on our own cards

We checked Google Cloud charges on our own Pink Cards. Six charges succeeded on six different cards between April and October 2026, with no declined Google Cloud charge on record: $25 (April 30, merchant “GOOGLE*CLOUD … MOUNTAIN VIEW”), $30 (June 22), £20 charged as $26.98 (June 26, “GOOGLE *CLOUD … DUBLIN”), £20 charged as $27.67 (August 16, DUBLIN), $25 (September 22) and $30 (October 14). Round amounts like these match Prepay credit purchases or manual payments rather than end-of-month usage bills, but we cannot see which product each one paid for. This does not change Google’s rule that prepaid cards are not accepted: six charges are a small sample, and we cannot promise your card or your next charge will pass.

Paying with a prepaid virtual card (USDT or USDC)

  1. Open pinkcard.cc/en and choose an amount: presets start at $110 ($110, $220, $500, $1000), or enter a custom amount from $100.
  2. Pay with USDT on BEP-20 (shown as BSC or BNB Smart Chain on most exchanges; network fee usually under $1) or ERC-20, or with USDC on ERC-20. Send exactly the amount shown, on exactly the network you picked.
  3. Enter your email twice. No account and no sign-up are needed.
  4. The card number, expiry, CVV and billing address arrive by email about 1–2 minutes after the payment confirms (check spam).
  5. In your Cloud Billing account add the card with the billing address from the email, in a payments profile whose country matches it. Then buy Prepay credits once in AI Studio.
  6. Top up the same card before it runs low. The number does not change. Card top-ups usually arrive within about 30 minutes, so do it before your Gemini balance reaches $0.

How much to load (worked examples)

  • One $25 Prepay purchase: $25 + $1 per transaction = $26 from the card (plus tax if your payments profile adds it).
  • A $110 card: about three $30 purchases (3 × $31 = $93) with room for the $2.50 monthly fee.
  • Auto-reload on a prepaid card: set the monthly auto-charge limit below what the card holds, because every reload is a charge and every declined reload costs a $1 failed-transaction fee.
  • Paying for a $110 card: ($110 + $10) × 1.03 = $123.60. Topping up $100 later: $5 + ($100 + $5) × 5% = $10.25 in fees, $110.25 in total.

Pink Card fees (as of 2026-10-17)

  • Card issuance: $10 one-time, plus a 3% service fee on (card amount + $10).
  • From the card balance after activation: $1 per transaction and $2.50 per month.
  • Failed authorizations are charged $1 too (at most 3 failed charges per card per month), so do not retry a declined payment in a loop.
  • Top-up of the same card: $5 plus 5% of (top-up amount + $5), usually on the card within about 30 minutes. Full fee table: pinkcard.cc/en/fees.
  • Once the card details are emailed, the order cannot be cancelled, so double-check your email address before paying.
Google’s Cloud Billing docs list prepaid cards as not accepted. If Google refuses the card or suspends billing, use an accepted card for that account; do not open new billing accounts to get around a refusal. Pink Card is a payment tool and does not replace complying with Google’s terms.

FAQ

How do I pay for the Gemini API?

In Google AI Studio click “Set up billing”, link a Google Cloud Billing account with a payment method, and choose Prepay (the default for new users since March 2026). Buy credits (minimum $5); usage is deducted from them.

Does Google Cloud accept prepaid cards?

Google’s Cloud Billing payment-methods page says prepaid cards are not accepted. Some prepaid cards still go through (six charges on our cards did), but Google can refuse them at any time.

What happens when my Gemini API Prepay balance reaches $0?

All API keys in all projects linked to that billing account stop working at the same time until you buy more credits. Auto-reload can top up automatically, with a monthly limit you set.

Do Gemini API Prepay credits expire? Can I get a refund?

Purchased credits expire after one year and are non-refundable, except when switching account types.

Can I pay the Gemini API with USDT or crypto?

Not directly. Some people buy a prepaid virtual card with USDT (BEP-20 or ERC-20) or USDC (ERC-20) at pinkcard.cc and add it to Cloud Billing, but Google’s docs list prepaid cards as unsupported, so it may be refused.
